Documents needed to register a car from abroad

Registering a car imported from abroad is more difficult than in the case of a car bought in the country of your residence. It is always a good idea to prepare the formalities in advance to save time and money.

In Poland, cars bought abroad must be registered within 30 days. First, you need to submit an application for car registration to the local Department of Communication (the required forms are available online), and the following documents should accompany the application:

  • vehicle registration certificate
  • vehicle card
  • proof of purchase (invoice, sale and purchase agreement,)
  • existing license plates
  • confirmation of payment of the excise tax (or document confirming an exemption from excise duty)
  • proof of customs clearance (for a vehicle imported from outside the EU)
  • certificate of (positive) technical examination
  • ID card or passport (if the vehicle is purchased by a company, an excerpt from the National Court Register)
  • certified translation of all the relevant documents

If someone else than the owner does the formalities, it is also required to submit an appropriate document allowing that person to act on behalf of the owner.

Translation of documents necessary to register a car from abroad

Before starting the procedure, you must have a certified translation of all the relevant vehicle documents, such as the vehicle registration certificate, vehicle card and the purchase invoice or sale and purchase contract. To save on translation costs, it is worth preparing a bilingual sale and purchase contract from the start. Such a contract only requires an authentication by a sworn translator, who confirms, with her/his signature and stamp, the compliance of its content in Polish with the text in the foreign language. In the case of cars imported for example from the US, you will also need a proof of customs clearance.

It often happens that the vehicle registration certificate and vehicle card are in a language other than the purchase contract or invoice. A good solution in this case is to request a certified translation. Also, the translation office will assist you in all the necessary translation formalities and save you a lot of time.

ANGOS Translation Office translates car documents in many languages, offering very attractive pricing solutions. We price our translations in packages, and not per the actual number of translated pages. It usually takes one day to translate car documents. Scanned versions of the original documents for translation can be sent by e-mail. You will just have to show the originals when picking up the final translated documents, as the translator is legally obliged to check the translation against the original document.
