The bust of Rui Barbosa - a Brazilian lawyer, politician and professor, and a great advocate of Polish independence - was unveiled in the Library of the Jagiellonian University. The ceremony with the participation of many distinguished guests took place on February 22, 2022.
“Rui Barbosa loved Poland because he loved freedom most of all.
In 522 years of Brazilian history, few Brazilians have fought as hard as Rui Barbosa for freedom, civilization, justice, law, human dignity and republic.
Rui Barbosa fought for the independence of Poland, not accepting the anguish felt by this wandering nation, people and homeland, without the right to its own land. " - said the Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil to Poland, Hadil Fontes da Rocha Vianna, in his speech.
Thanking for honoring "a Brazilian statesman with a Polish heart," he added: "I am convinced that in Poland and all of Europe there is no better place for the bust of Rui Barbosa than the Jagiellonian Library. This prestigious university, which has made an enormous contribution to the development of humanity over the centuries, unites with Rui Barbosa in promoting human dignity, in the love of knowledge and in the development of civilization."
