Simultaneous translation in English and technical support of the event

The tradition of awarding the title of doctor honoris causa of the Jagiellonian University dates back to 1816, when Feliks Jan Bentkowski - literary historian, bibliographer, linguist and archivist - was the first one to be honored with the title of Doctor Honoris Causa Alma Mater Jagellonicae.

The honorary doctorate is the highest dignity title awarded to particularly distinguished people for their outstanding achievements in the field of science, culture, art, political and social activity.

The ceremony of awarding the title of honoris causa is very special and takes place during a ceremonial session of the Senate of the Jagiellonian University. A speech is delivered in Latin, and the awarded person receives the symbols of the dignity title obtained: a diploma and an epitogue.

Those that were awarded the honorary doctorate of the Jagiellonian University include: Józef Ignacy Kraszewski, Jan Matejko, Henryk Sienkiewicz, Tomasz Woodrow Wilson, Ignacy Paderewski, Maria Skłodowska-Curie, Karol Szymanowski, St. John Paul II, Czesław Miłosz, Andrzej Wajda, Olga Tokarczuk, Stanisław Lem, Krzysztof Penderecki, Zbigniew Brzeziński, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and Norman Davies.

Recently, this noble group was joined by prof. Wojciech Żurek - an outstanding scientist specialising in quantum physics, the creator of such concepts as quantum discord, pointer basis or quantum Darwinism. In the justification of the decision of the Senate of the Jagiellonian University to award him the title we read:

The Senate of the Jagiellonian University / ... / decided to award Professor Wojciech Żurek the title of doctor honoris causa of the Jagiellonian University / ... / in particular for:

  • fundamental research on the phenomena of decoherence and explaining how the classical properties of the observed world emerge as a result of interactions and correlations of the quantum system with other systems of the environment;
  • for proving the impossibility of replicating ("cloning") unknown quantum states, which is nowadays the basis of quantum cryptography and quantum information transfer;
  • for showing that non-entangled quantum states may have non-classical correlations;
  • for developing the theory of dynamic phase transitions and the mechanism of the appearance of topological defects in the transitions, which has been confirmed by numerous experiments;
  • for many years of nurturing ties with the Polish scientific community, including taking care of young researchers from the Jagiellonian University.
